System Theory

I found that the system theory has produced a great influence in my thinking but I may not aware.

End User Validation

It is difficult to design a product feature purely based on user feedback.

Standup dynamic

If a standup is for one person to review all project status, the standup  will get long and for those three minutes when the review and the project owner is in discussion and the rest of team is idle.  When this is happening, I think that the best practice is to split the meeting to multiple separate standup meetings.

Acquisition and merging of companies and manager's jobs and challenges

It is a very healthy and productivity improving activities for the society and for shareholder and requires special skilled people to manage the process and make it smooth.  The goal for management is really about how to make the values from the acquired company to form the synergy, so one plus one is not just equal to two but greater than two.

This is about the value, which is a lot of times measured as Return on Investment.  From shareholder perspective, in a standard financial term, it is the EPS.  This is not about the size of the merged company.  The number of employees may increase or decrease.  The number of sites may increase or decrease.  The number of customers may increase or decrease.  The number of products may increase or decrease.  The point is the share holder's value should be increased.

Whether you within a merged and acquired company are on the increased or decreased sides, it really depends on what is the net contribution you and your organization are is on the equation.

My 2003 resume

I found my old resume.

Revolution

What are important to our success?

1. People

Great people build great product. We need smart people.

Registered with Twitter

Twitter provides a service to let me post entries from my IM client.

This is an interest idea. Here is a link to my Twitter site.

For some reason, I feel that I am more like talking with someone when I use the IM client. When I use Blogger editor, I am writing.

Google Home page also provide the capacity to do the post-it like notes. I almost never use it. Typing text with a browser is acceptable for writing a doc. Not for taking a note.

What do you think?

Migrated to the new blogger

Google finally provides the migration from the old beta blogger to the new blogger.

It took less then a minute. Now I can use a single login to maintain all my blogger sites.

I have moved all my postings from dylanwanpmp.blogspot.com to dylanwan.blogspot.com and the old URL no longer work.

I will keep dylanwanoracle.blogspot.com and maybe dylanwanmuse.blogspot.com since it is listed in several blog directories.

Bride & Prejudice

This is a great movie. I really love it.

I like Aishwarya Rai very much. I am impressed with her interview in CBS EarlyShow.

I cannot move my old content to the new blog.

Here is the Help file that have further explanation:

Trying Google Calendar Publishing...

I am trying to publish an calendar event. By clicking the follow icon, you can add My Birthday party to your google calendar!

Tried Writely today...

This article is posted from Writely.

Yahoo! Calendar Sharing

Yahoo! Calendar allows you to share your calendar with other people.

Here is about how to share your calendar with others:

1. You can click on the Sharing link, which is available on the top left of the page.
2. If you only want to share your calendar to a limited sets of people, you can set as "Friends can view my calendar; Special Friends can also modify my calendar."
3. Add your friend one by one to the My Friend list
4. Until now, you have granted the permission to others to view or edit your calendar

To view your calendar, other people with the permission can use the URL: http://calendar.yahoo.com/.

My Comments

There seems no public calendar search capability so your friend have to know your Yahoo ID to access your calendar.

In general, the functionality provided by Yahoo!Calendar is limited. you cannot easily find whether you can show both friends' calendar side by side with my own calendar.

Registered with MySpace.com

1. Registration
The registration page is quite simple. It established the two URLs automatically.

My URL : http://www.myspace.com/95539794
My Blog URL: http://blog.myspace.com/95539794

2. InBox?
I have an Inbox, but I cannot find how to send a message.

3. Video
It allows me to upload a video. Is this a vLog?

4. Calendar
It also allows me to put my calendar there. I do not think that I will use it. My Calendar are really my work calendar. It needs to be under my company's intranet. I use it all the time so I do not think that I will need another public calendar. Maybe for reminders of my friends's birthday or special events? I do not know. It seems not very useful. This is also holding true for other calendars - Yahoo Calendar, Google Calendar, etc.

Actually subscribing public calendar may be a good business idea. I frequent want to know what to do during weekend, especially want to know where to bring my kids. It would be great if I can subscribe a public calendar, that's say, "3-5 year old kids events in S.F Bayarea". I can just check my own calendar that includes all the "ads" invites. These Ads are welcome since it helps arrange my weekend. I hope that the nearby Zoo, Muzeum, or street fair, can publish their event calendar on the web and I can subscribe.

5. Blog
I do not really need another one.
However, it would be a great idea if I can use their URL to redirect to the one I have on Google Blogger.

6. My School
It should not be difficult to provide a list of schools for the users to pick from the list. Not sure why they do a search.

I enter "CMU", but it cannot find Carnegie Mellon University. There are rooms for improvement.

I cannot see "Taiwan" or "China" on the search list. It should allow me to enter on my own.

7. Personal Information
They can really help me to host my entire RESUME. I used to do this on the web site like Monster.com.

Are they competing with each other?

What missing there are "Work Experience" or "Project". It will be a key differentiation for professional social network and these public social network.

8. Grade Your Professor

I do not think that this is a good idea. If I were a professor, I would not want to be graded in this way. Also, what is the intention? Help other kids to select courses to take? Why do we need this in public?

I do believe that "扬善于公堂，规过于私室" is a basic principle we should follow.

9. Why not "Grade your student" or "Grade your employee"

I think that this would be a good idea. As an employer, I would like see if my candidate can get some recommendation letters from his teachers and from his ex-employers. I think that the social website should provide such service to host these recommendations. Actually I will hope that the candidate can get a list of people that I can access from his MySpace. I thik that the busines process flow can be as follow:

1. I request for reference
2. He go back to see if any his teacher or former employer can provide one.
3. The system should generate a key for me o access or even contact his reference.
4. Our conversation should be private so the candidate should not need to know our conversation.
5. I hope that the service provider can certified with the school so I can trust the recommendation.

Basically, I think that we can move the entire graduate school application process online.

Registered with Friendster

I learned this web site from my friend. It seems that the site is popular among college students.

Comparing the site with other similar I know, it is a little boring.

It also provides Blog service. I do not think that I need to have so many blog sites.

I do not know why they all provide same services. We are lacking creativity and imaginaion in this industry.

LinkedIn

I have created my profile in LinkedIn.
http://www.linkedin.com/in/dylanwan

It provides a great service. Please join and we can be linked.

Most popular Instant Messenger in China - QQ

I talked with some college students in Beijing. They do not know Google Talk. They heard Yahoo and MSN, but have never used it. They used to use ICQ and now use OICQ, which is developed by a local company Tencent, the company provides QQ.

When I visited Qingdao, my father's hometown, my relative wants me to install QQ, so they can communicate with me. I tried to set up Yahoo email accounts for them. I showed how easy this can be done, but they still felt too complicate, so I gave up and they created a QQ account for me.

I tried QQ after I come back. I tried the Chat room function. It is almost a close network within China. I do not see people from outside on the network.

No doubt this is a very active online chat network. I practice my Pinying skills a lot.

I also found an article in BusinessWeek online about Tencent.
