A customer is not really paying for a produuct. They are paying for a commitment. It is especially true for software. Actually software nowadays is more like services.
For a customer, a product does not just need to be working now, but they expect that they will get upgrades, which including the fixes, as well as enhancements that they are looking for.
Some kind of focuses are important. If customers of a product are very different and having differents needs, keeping the commitments will be difficult.
Selecting customers that are similar can save the cost of development and maitenance.
Trying to be everything, is becoming nothing.
